  24. To test your phone line for noise, you may try the following:
  25.  
  26. 1. Connect to another modem  ( a BBS at ANY speed is OK for testing).
  27. 2. Type:  +++  (You will receive an OK - meaning you are in COMMAND 
  28.                         mode).
  29. 3. Type:  AT%Q <enter>    (You will see a number).
  30. 4. Type:  A/         (Do  A/  repeatedly and quickly, about 25 - 30 
  31.                              times)
  32. 5. Watch the number that keeps appearing after each  A/
  33.       The number should be anywhere from 001 to 015.  If it says over
  34.        30, you have serious line noise.  If it gets near 50, you are 
  35.        going to lose the CARRIER DETECT.  If it drops to 000, you have
  36.  
  37.        lost the CARRIER DETECT.
  38. 6. Type  ATO to return to the online state and continue with the BBS.
  39.  
  40. Try this test with a BBS that you usually have no problem connecting
  41. with.  The  AT%Q  will probably show readings about 002 to 015.  Next
  42. call a BBS or two with which  you usually have problems obtaining high
  43. speed connections.  If it is a phone line noise, you probably will see
  44. much higher readings with the test.  This might prove that your
  45. problem is with the phone line noise and not your modem.
